Recreation

The lodges provide a variety of services and facilities to visitors and to Cranberry residents. All provide boats and guides. They also offer rental accommodations that range from log cabins to electrical hook-ups for camper units. A few have restaurants for guests and others who wish to dine out.

An attractive feature for both local residents and visitors is the provincial park just west of the town centre along the shore of Lake Athapapuskow. The park includes a government dock for launching boats, a public beach, a six-hole golf course, a horseshoe pitch, and a playing field with two baseball diamonds. In summer this park is the focus of community activities, such as the annual fishing derby. Adjacent to the park is found a private trailer court, an area for picnicking or overnight camping and a miniature golf course.

Cranberry Portage has a number of facilities for winter recreation as well as for summer activities. The arena building, constructed in 1984, is used for ice skating and hockey, while the recreation centre next to it has four sheets of natural ice for curling and facilities for dances and various community activities. In winter the two buildings mentioned above are a hive of activity as people participate in winter sports.

On the northwest edge of town a cross-country ski trail has been cut through the surrounding forest. Ice fishing and skidooing are also favourite winter activities. In February, the community holds its annual winter festival which includes snow sculpturing, a novelty curling bonspiel, a talent night, plus a variety of other competitions and events common throughout northern Manitoba.
